Jean & Rachelle Telfort

A New Haiti

Pastor Jean Telfort was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. As a child, he grew up going to church in Haiti, but felt unsatisfied and was moved with compassion for the plight of his people. He walked away from the church and became an artist, dancer, poet, and political activist, in the hopes of instilling change in Haitian society. During this time he became heavily involved in drugs and alcohol, a staple in the life of the artistic social arena. Upon moving to the United States when he was 21, Jean continued his passion for art and dance.

At 29 years of age, the Lord intervened in Jean’s life, saving him from suicide and drug addiction, redeemed by the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Jean became active in ministry, fulfilling his call as a pastor to the body of Christ.

Jean was leading a small Haitian church in Charlotte when Ted White (pastor at SCCC) met him some 10 years ago. They became fast friends as they not only shared the love of Christ, but a deep desire to help those that are less fortunate. Jean introduced Ted to SCCC through Jackson Park Ministries and the common thread of helping people. While Jean and his family were giving all they had to help people, they themselves were not being cared for by anyone. As they came to SCCC, the question was asked of them, “How are you doing?” The honest answer was, “Not too good.” So began a journey of love, care and discipleship, with and for, Jean’s family.

We’ve had the privilege to walk alongside of them as they were a part of the transitional housing ministry at Jackson Park, Jean leading the Haitian Bridge Ministry at SCCC as a pastor, followed by his role as a benevolence pastor here at Steele Creek.

In 2015, Jean and Rachelle and their family returned to Haiti where, under the partnership of A New Haiti and SCCC, they oversee the church, pastors, and ministry in meeting the needs of the people.
